GUERRERO, MARIANA CEPEDA

Mariana is listed among the WWII casualties of the Northern Mariana Islands. The list -- encompassing the dates June 1944 through July 4, 1946 -- notes Mariana as being an infant.

The final list, certified by the Government of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) in 2004, is the culmination of extensive review of information compiled from various sources.

In addition to extensive review of existing lists compiled by the Department of War Claims, the CNMI Office of the Washington Representative, the Diocese of Chalan Kanoa, various federal agencies and the CNMI Historic Preservation Office, efforts were made to reach out to surviving next-of-kin.

The Marianas Memorial is the culmination of this extensive process. In addition to listing the names of death casualties, this memorial also symbolizes the only tombstone for those who lost their lives during the war and whose final resting place is not known.
